The risk was always there. When I wrote my article "The Long And Short Theses In Coal," I wrote on how the coal sector (KOL) was exposed to a possible panic. This panic as arrived.

The short thesis as defended by me isn't really a call to short, as much as a call to a defensive posture. The rationale is that the situation is serious enough that it might at some point generate a panic where much lower valuations will be attained by the stocks in the sector. This has repeated itself many times in the market even under less serious circumstances, so it cannot be ruled out today.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Shares of Zynga Inc. were halted in morning trades on Friday after the stock fell by more than 13%. Trading was halted after Facebook Inc. began trading in its much-awaited initial public offering. Other social networking shares were also down in morning trades. LinkedIn was trading down more than 5%, while Groupon was off 7.5% and Yelp Inc. tumbled more than 6%. Also in the red were shares of Renren Inc. , the China-based social networking company, which were down more than 12%. The social media shares sharply added to losses after Facebook's trading debut. Shares of Facebook were trading mostly flat at $38.

Soft Q2 guidance is hammering Autodesk (ADSK -15%) post-earnings. During its earnings call, Autodesk claimed weak sales to EMEA and Media & Entertainment customers are hurting results; it blames the latter on a mix shift towards suites, and weak demand for Creative Finishing software. Jefferies (Buy) also notes maintenance and backlog numbers were weak, but thinks Autodesk's margin improvements and transition to a subscription-based model will drive shares higher.

We first wrote about Vonage (VG) back in 2009, when the stock was trading at $0.40 and fears of bankruptcy loomed. Since that time, Vonage management has done an incredible job of nursing the company back to financial health, despite a very competitive market and a weak overall economic environment.

As Vonage's financial situation has improved, shareholders have been rewarded with the stock price up significantly from panic lows set back in 2009. However, despite the rebound in VG's shares, the stock price has dropped significantly in the last year, and still languishes near multi-year lows . The share price also implies a valuation which suggests an imminent financial collapse. We think fears of Vonage's demise have been and remain greatly exaggerated.
